June 3, 2012 – Kayaking & Canoeing on the Charles River
The rain mostly held off on Sunday June 3rd for the ICO and St. Peter’s kayak/canoe trip on the Charles River in Newton. Danny, St. Peter’s staff member, and 7 high school boys and girls were joined by 5 ICO volunteers for nearly 4 miles of kayaking and canoeing. After warming up with some frisbee, introductions, and safety instructions at Nahanton Park the group paddled south and west on 5 kayaks and 1 canoe.
The trip, postponed because of rain on Saturday, was snuck in through threatening skies of wind and rain. Venturing through lands held in public trust since 1890 the group saw some wildlife, including a great blue heron standing on the shores and flying overhead, Canadian geese and young offspring swimming in the shallows, and yes, one turtle that seemingly was hoping for the sun to peak through.
The river was a bit windy with some slight rain coming down for a brief period, but the participants proved adept in both their paddling and decision making skills. After navigating the river bends the trip ended with pizza for lunch just down the street at Riverside Pizza in Dedham before heading back to Dorchester.
