June 16 & 17 – Shawmee-Crowell Camping Trip
On June 16 and 17 Amy, Ryan, and Rucker took 7 girls age 11-15 and three representatives from the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center's Let's Get Moving Program on an overnight camping trip to Shawmee-Crowell State Forest in Sandwich, MA. The day started off sunny as we left East Boston but the clouds set in the closer we got to the Cape. That did not deter the girls from embracing a camping adventure. For five girls it was their first time camping! Everyone pitched in setting up camp, with the experienced campers leading the way on pitching tents.
After getting our bearings around the campground and eating lunch we headed to Scusset Beach nearby. The afternoon remained grey and cool but that did not deter the swimmers of the group. The girls braved the cold water and enjoyed some time splashing around. Unfortunately, beach time was cut short by the need to get dry and warm so we headed back to the campsite.
Everyone relaxed for a bit and then played an improvised game of charades, where we acted out trees, rocks, and Justin Bieber before starting dinner prep. We all pitched in to make a healthy meal of green salad, rice and beans, and turkey and veggie burgers. The girls were on dish-duty and then assisted Ryan starting the fire. The fire gave us some welcome warmth as we prepared fire-baked bananas stuff with yummy toppings like chocolate chips, walnuts, or peanut butter.
After dessert we took a quiet night walk around the campground to look at stars and hear night sounds. Rucker led one of the favorite activities of the weekend where we created neon sparks in our mouths by crunching on wintergreen life savers. Try it, it works!
The next day we woke up early and after breakfast packed up camp for our final activity of the weekend. It was a beautiful sunny day and the group took a nice walk along Cape Cod Canal and were treated to some bird, fish, and boat watching. While lunch was being prepared we split up and played frisbee, soccer, and catch - with some girls showing off their skills with a football!
