Boston Inspiring Connections Outdoors
July 30, 2011 – Canoeing and Swimming on Ipswich River
On Saturday July 30, a group of 21 youth from St. Peters, 2 St. Peters coordinators, and 5 Boston ICO volunteers headed to Ipswich for a sunny afternoon of canoeing and swimming. Special thanks to Chris and Michelle for organizing the trip and navigating logistical obstacles in the face of unanticipated delays in leaving St. Peters. The kids arrived in Ipswich around 11:30am, and after a brief opening circle we had lunch, before determining groups and getting into canoes.
Thanks also to Ryan for acting as our quartermaster for the trip, to Beth, who supplied us with sandwiches, snacks, and drink, and to Elizabeth, who took photos and graciously agreed to forgo canoeing in order to assist two kids uncomfortable with the water. And three cheers to Foote Bros in Ipswich, who offered us a generous discount and accommodated the delay. Nearly every kid had a chance to row-- some were in a boat for the very first time-- and demonstrated rhythm and tenacity. We were impressed, though the adults at the bow expended most energy trying to orient the canoes to avoid shore banks.
