Boston Inspiring Connections Outdoors
February 28, 2015 - XC Skiing at Weston Ski Track with EBNHC
Last Saturday morning ICO volunteers Ben, Lizzie, and Alice met up with the Let's Get Moving group for a sun- and snow-filled day of cross country skiing. We met up at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Clinic, and then all drove out to Weston where there were hundreds of people out on skis enjoying the beautiful bluebird day.
We had a group of 11 kids from East Boston, none of whom had ever been on skis before, so the first thing everyone had to figure out was hot to get their skis on and off - easier said then done! After mastering the bindings and figuring out how to use poles, we took off towards the woods and explored the trail system around the perimeter of the golf course. It was amazing to see how quickly all of the kids picked up on skiing, and to see their confidence grow as they all began to fall less and stride more.
After a big loop around the field, we had all worked up a pretty good appetite and met inside the ski center to refuel with an impressively healthy lunch (no chocolate in the trail mix!). Rejuvenated, the kids were all super eager to get back out there and explore some of the trails we hadn't skied yet. We spent the afternoon checking out new trails and eventually all converged on the biggest hill in sight where everyone got to refine their downhill (and uphill skills). The kids all loved the downhill (who doesn't) and we spent the last hour of the day tucking, racing, trying to get air, crashing, and taking some pretty great videos. Eventually, we had to force the kids off the hill and back to the ski center to return equipment. When no one wants to leave, its clearly been a really great trip!
