On June 25 we took an overnight trip to the small town of Sandwich on Cape Cod, just over the SagamoreBridge. East Boston Neighborhood Health Center's Let's Get Movin' Program brought 8 middle school (ages 11-14) girls with three agency chaperones and three ICO volunteers for a one night camping trip to Shawmee Crowell State Forest. The morning started off with some apprehension as we all made our way across Bostonin the rain to meet in East Boston. But by 10:00am when we left East Boston, there were some clouds but no rain - luckily the rain held off all weekend for us!
We arrived in Sandwich and set up the tents and cooking area in our adjoining campsites. After lunch we got ready for the beach and despite the chilly water and mix of sun and clouds the girls took the plunge and LOVED the water. At one point even a young seal came over to check us out, which was fun to see up close. Back at the campsite we ate a delicious dinner of grilled turkey burgers, salad, rice and beans, and banana boats (that we cooked directly on the campfire). Before going to bed we took a silent night hike to hear and see all that goes on in the campground after dark. The next day we broke up camp and ate breakfast before taking a nice walk along the Cape Cod Canal. The sun was shining and it was a lovely summer day as we ate lunch by the canal and then headed back to Boston.
