For the second year in a row, ICO hosted St Peter's for a weekend of hiking and swimming at the Schuss Skihouse in Bartlett NH, thanks to the generousity of Schuss members. After slogging through terrible traffic on 93 North, St Peter's arrived in Bartlett early Saturday afternoon with two leaders and 17 youth. After a quick tour of the skihouse and lunch we headed out to hike nearby Mount Stanford. It was a perfect hiking day with clear skies, low humidity, and a nice breeze- a far cry from August the year before when we faced a fierce hailstorm and had to slog down the mountain through a trail that had become an icy stream of slush. The group loved the hike, and for several including a young woman from Nigeria, it was their first time hiking. Following the hike, the group ventured into the icy river waters near the Schuss House, and several leaders went shopping for ingredients to cook another Cape Verdean feast. Dinner was compliments of Manuel the St Peter's leader with help from several youth and ICO leaders.
After a hearty Sunday breakfast provided by our host Ken MacLaurin, we packed and cleaned and headed to Echo Lake State Park for some swimming and lunch before the long drive home. During the closing circle, answers to the question "what surprised you the most about the weekend?" included how cold the river was, how much they liked the mountain hike, how long it took to drive up, and how much fun everything was. Thank you to ICO leaders Michelle Manion and Chris Carroll for helping out, and to the wonderful St Peter's leaders Manuel and Maria.
