We had a fantastic trip to the Harbor Islands' Spectacle Island on Saturday August 13th. Despite some concern that we would miss the ferry, we made it in the nick of time! Once we were all on board the day became a very fun and relaxed day. The group of nine youth (ages from 10-12) from St. Peter's karate group were a very enthusiastic and energetic group, one of the best that I have ever worked with!
I thought the group would be focused on the water, but they were excited to try everything. After a quick ferry ride to Spectacle Island, the kids stopped to try out the hula hoops hanging by the visitor center. One person even succeeded at using three at once! After the hoops, we took a hike up the larger of the two drumlins, admiring the views of Boston and the harbor as we hiked and settled in to relax at the top. After lunch we headed to the beach and despite the water being VERY cold, many of us swam, tossed a football in the water, and got "buried" in sand while sitting on the beach. We ended the day by playing games that the John, the agency lead from St. Peter's taught us. We even played a little soccer before heading back to the ferry.
It was a great day and a great group of kids and volunteers. I want to give a big thank you to the volunteers that helped on the trip: Renee Charp and Allan Shaw.
I hope to see you all on some upcoming trips!
