April 16, 2011 – Blue Hills Hike and Observatory Visit
I am happy to report that we had a great trip with St Peters this past Saturday. I'd like to specially thank the four great new volunteers- Alex, Allison, Lauren and Christie, who helped make the trip run very smoothly. The trip started with a short hike from the Blue Hills trailside museum up the red dot trail to the Blue Hills Weather Observatory. We arrived at the observatory at 10:30 and after watching a short video on weather and history of the site, we got a tour. After the tour, the kids got a chance to make and fly their own kites which I think was a highlight for them except that by the time we went back outside it had gotten considerably colder and windier so most didn't last very long before they wanted to go back inside. Fortunately, the Observatory staff let us set up for lunch inside as the winds continued to increase. After lunch, Lauren led a very fun game that got us all warmed back up and provided lots of fun and laughs. Around 2pm we headed back down the red dot trail and finished around 2:30 with a closing circle where the group- 6 girls and one boy plus one new St Peters leader, shared their favorite parts of the day which included everything from Lauren's game, to the kite flying, to "my favorite thing was the whole day". Thanks to new volunteer Allison, we have lots of great pictures.
